Festival otvara dobitnik Zlatne palme TROUGAO TUGE Rubena Östlunda, a zatvara svjetska premijera domaćeg filma PRAZNIK RADA Pjera Žalice. Javna predavanja u programu Masterclass održat će Paul Schrader, Sergei Loznitsa, Ruben Östlund, Ari Folman, Jasmila Žbanić i Michael Winterbottom. UVODNIK
The 28th edition of the Sarajevo Film Festival continues its dedication to the event’s guiding concept – to present films and television series of the highest quality to our audiences, and to be a platform for the development of film production in our region. The Festival will screen more than 220 films from around the world, including fifty-one from Southeast Europe that will have their premieres in our four competition sections, making the Festival the biggest presentation of our regional film production in the world. Each year, we face the question of what the next edition of the Sarajevo Film Festival will bring. Around the globe, the past two years have been a period of constant change. The way films are screened has changed, and audiences have adopted, embraced, and adapted to new opportunities. Nevertheless, amid the ongoing upheaval, the desire of filmgoers to watch films together was stronger than ever. Watching films in a festival atmosphere, indoors and out, in cinemas in Sarajevo in summertime remains a truly unique experience. We are happy that, once again, we will gather in our customary festival locations with our guests from around the world, without limitations. This year’s Palme d’Or winner, Ruben Östlund’s TRIANGLE OF SADNESS, kicks off the Festival, while the world premiere of a Bosnian film, Pjer Žalica’s MAY LABOR DAY, brings it to a close. The ever-popular masterclass programme includes public lectures by Östlund, Ari Folman, Sergei Loznitsa, Paul Schrader, Michael Winterbottom, and our very own Jasmila Žbanić. More than one thousand film and television professionals will gather for the CineLink Film Industry Days, Talents Sarajevo, the newly introduced Heart of Sarajevo Awards for televisions series – all together, a rich programme of conferences and the promotion of the most promising film and TV drama projects from our region. Our audiences – whether watching in Sarajevo, Mostar, or around the country via our VoD platform – will have the chance to see avantpremieres and premieres of Bosnian and regional films and series, as well as numerous international titles, and so we are confident this edition of the Sarajevo Film Festival will be a celebration of the art of the moving image for the entire city, country, and wider region. We are especially happy this year to showcase numerous films and television series from Bosnia and Herzegovina, including new projects by some of our country’s most prominent auteurs. In addition to closing the festival with Pjer Žalica’s latest, we present the premiere of Aida Begić’s new film, THE BALLAD; the first Bosnian drama series presented in our Avant Premiere and the first produced by BH Telecom, Danis Tanović and Amra Bakšić Čamo's THE HOLLOW; and a pre-festival, free screening of the working version of Jasmila Žbanić's documentary film about Emerik Blum on August 11th at the Coca-Cola Open Air Cinema. Zbanić will use the opportunity to invite members of the audience to help her complete the film by sharing memories or materials they might have about the unbelievable development of Sarajevo under Blum’s leadership of Energoinvest and the city. A festival such as ours is made possible by the genuine support of our sponsors, backers, and partners, which include numerous private and public companies, government institutions, institutions of culture in Bosnia and Herzegovina, national and international foundations, and foreign embassies in our country that share our values and our desire to see the continued growth and development of the Sarajevo Film Festival as a highly valuable cultural event with broad economic and social impact on the City of Sarajevo and Bosnia and Herzegovina at large. We are very grateful for their support. We give thanks to all friends of the Festival and other people who help organise it, both throughout the year and in the immediate pre-festival period. Their love of film and their desire to see the Festival thrive is the true secret of our success. Our special gratitude this year, however, is reserved for Mirsad Purivatra for his phenomenal and inspiring leadership of our beloved Festival from its founding until now. After twenty-seven years at the helm, Mirsad Purivatra has withdrawn from the day-to-day management of the Festival and now continues to support its further growth and development from his post as Chair of the Obala Art Centar Association. Miro – thank you! This year, we welcome filmgoers and our guests to a Festival that has returned to its full capacity, and we hope that they will have many memorable moments at this 28th Sarajevo Film Festival. Welcome to the 28th Sarajevo Film Festival
INTRODUCTION
Noć prije sveÄanog otvaranja 28. Sarajevo Film Festivala, na predfestivalskoj projekciji puno Ljetno kino Coca-Cola
Specijalna predfestivalska projekcija
Jasmila Žbanić i produkcija DEBLOKADA tragaju za filmskim arhivom, fotografijama i priÄama o Emeriku Blumu, legendarnom direktoru Energoinvesta i gradonaÄelniku Sarajeva. 28. Sarajevo Film festival bit će otvoren danas, 12. augusta filmom TROUGAO TUGE Rubena Östlunda.
A special pre-festival screening
A day before the official opening on Thursday, a special work-in-progress screening of a new documentary film about Emerik Blum by Jasmila Žbanic was held at the Coca-Cola Open Air Cinema. Entry to the screening was free as a gift to the public. Žbanić and DEBLOKADA production are searching for film archives, photos and stories about Emeric Blum, legendary director of Energoinvest and mayor of Sarajevo. They decided to screen their work-in-progress before it is complete in order to share with the citizens of Sarajevo what they have found so far and ask them to assist in its completion. This is a unique process that will allow all citizens to participate in the making of this film. This experiment should be particularly interesting for young audiences because it will reveal a story about Bosnia and Herzegovina that may seem like science fiction to them. The 28th Sarajevo Film Festival will be opened on Friday, August 12 with film TRIANGLE OF SADNESS by Ruben Östlund

Sarajevo Film Festival mi je orijentir u vremenu
Ulogu voditelja/voditeljice na ceremoniji otvaranja Sarajevo Film Festival povjerava uspjeÅ¡nim, perspektivnim, mlaÄ‘im bh. filmskim umjetnicima. Koliko Vam znaÄi Å¡to ste to ove godine Vi?
INTERVJU
HELENA VUKOVIĆ Host of the 28th Sarajevo Film Festival Opening Ceremony
INTERVIEW
Sarajevo Film Festival is my reference point in time
The role of the host at the Sarajevo Film Festival opening ceremony will be given to successful and promising young BiH film artists. How much does it mean to you that this will be you this year? This is a great honor for me. I'm a big dreamer by nature and I've been dreaming about this role since my student days. I am excited, joyful and grateful that I fit the vision of the host as a promising film artist. I hope that my future commitment, effort and love will justify the role that was entrusted to me this year. What does Sarajevo Film Festival mean to you? What kind of collaborations have you had so far, has this affected you and how much, both privately and professionally, and if so, in what way? I like to say that Sarajevo Film Festival is one of the best ambassadors for BiH and Sarajevo, turning it into an unrivaled center of film art and culture for seven days. I had the opportunity to meet a lot of people from the SFF organization team and when I saw how much love and commitment they were investing into the SFF throughout the year, it was no wonder that it has lived, grown and resisted all sorts of challenges for so long. Sarajevo Film Festival is my reference point in time – every year I make my summer plans around the SFF because I want to be there to support my colleagues and friends. I especially enjoy watching movies at the Coca-Cola Open Air Cinema – when a screening was sold out, we used to climb onto the nearby garages and secretly enjoy the screenings under the starry sky. I remembered that at the moment when I was supposed to bow to the audience at the full Coca-Cola Open Air Cinema last year, at the opening of the 27th SFF. That's when I met a lot of colleagues and made some important contacts. How would you describe it to actors from other parts of the world who have not had the opportunity to be a part of the SFF yet? So far I've met a large number of young colleagues from the region who, once they come to the SFF, keep coming back every year. This is really a minor paradise for every young actor, because in addition to various films and programs, master classes with prominent filmmakers, Sarajevo Film Festival provides a number of platforms for collaboration and networking within the film community. And I must not fail to mention the unbeatable nightlife in the city during the SFF. When did acting become your choice and your calling? Ever since I was a little girl, when asked "What are you going to be when you grow up?" I readily replied "Actress!", although I am convinced that at the time I had no idea what it really meant. In the fifth grade I started attending acting workshops led by our great actress Jasna Diklić, with whom I later continued to grow in the Juventa Youth Poetry Theatre. I had a serious plan to study abroad and she said at the time "Too bad, I always thought that you could try the Academy." She probably doesn't remember, but this encouraged me to take the admission exam and turn that desire that smoldered inside me for so long into reality – the rest is history! Today I can't imagine doing anything else, or at least not with so much passion. I enjoy all the challenges that acting puts before me, even when I'm not sure if I can rise to meet them. NOT SO FRIENDLY NEIGHBORHOOD AFFAIR/ DESET U POLA, the film by Danis Tanović that opened the 27th Sarajevo Film Festival last year, was a great success in the region. What do you remember from the filming? NOT SO FRIENDLY NEIGHBORHOOD AFFAIR is my first professional film experience and will always have a special place in my heart. That's right, thousands of people across the region saw the film and it also garnered positive responses from audiences at festivals outside the region. I had the opportunity to present myself to the Dutch audience at the Eastern Neighbours Film Festival in The Hague which is lovingly and impeccably organized by a small group of people every year, and the reactions to the film were more than good. I remember the filming by the great happiness when it started, and the emptiness when it ended, and the great people I had the opportunity to work with and learn from. How was the atmosphere on the set, collaboration with Kerim Čutun, your co-lead in the film and your colleague from the Academy? The atmosphere was busy because we only had 21 days of filming, which is objectively not a lot of time, but we still found the time to hang out and have fun. Cooperation with the entire film crew was pleasant and inspiring, including Kerim. I think he's one of our most authentic young actors. I like the balance between his casualness but also dedication, his boldness but also moderation. We were always cheering for and comforting each other and I would wish that kind of cooperation on anyone. What roles and projects will you be working on in the near future? I am currently looking forward to working on the play called The Idiot, which will be directed by Selma Spahić later this year at the Sarajevo National Theater.
