UVODNIK
Summer Screen i Kinoscope programi su rekalibrirani i, dok Summer Screen donosi panoramu najboljih svjetskih arthouse filmova prvog dijela godine, Kinoscope istražuje nove tendencije svjetske kinematografije. Javna predavanja u programu Masterclass održat će Mark Cousins, Lynne Ramsay, Charlie Kaufman i Jessica Hausner. Sarajevo Film Festivalu! Jovan Marjanović, direktor Sarajevo Film Festivala

Dobrodošli na 29. Sarajevo Film Festival
The 29th edition of the Sarajevo Film Festival remains faithful to the event’s now well-established concept: to screen the best films and drama series for our audiences and to serve as a platform for the development of film production in our region. The slate of more than 220 films from around the world, including forty-nine premieres from our region and distributed across four competitive programmes, is what makes the Sarajevo Film Festival the world’s greatest showcase of film and television produced in South-East Europe. What’s new in this forthcoming edition of the Sarajevo Film Festival? There are a few programming changes. The Open Air programme has been expanded so that, in addition to the best new movies by international filmmakers which are the biggest draw for the audience, it will also include a segment focused on locally produced films that will be screened at the Old Town Summer Screen cinema. The Summer Screen and Kinoscope sections have been recalibrated so that the Summer Screen will offer a slate of the year’s best art-house films, while Kinoscope will explore emerging trends in the world of cinema. We celebrate an important anniversary from before the dawn of the Sarajevo Film Festival. The festival is rooted in numerous film screenings and events that were staged by the Obala Art Centre during the Siege of Sarajevo from 1992 to 1995 at the Cinema Apollo. Despite those challenging times, what was collectively known as the first wartime movie theatre offered a desperately needed break from reality to the residents of Sarajevo, who endured the siege of their city for three-and-a-half years. The cinema, located in the basement of the Sarajevo Academy of Performing Arts, was always packed despite the risks moviegoers had to take to reach it in a city under almost constant sniping and mortar fire. With the strong support of the international film community, various film programmes and retrospectives of the selections of top international festivals, such as those of Edinburgh and Locarno, were staged in Sarajevo without interruption from February 1993 to December 1995, giving rise in 1995 to the Sarajevo Film Festival as we now know it. This year, we mark the 30th anniversary of the launch of the Cinema Apollo. To celebrate that historic moment and the festival itself, we will showcase the favourite films that were screened in besieged Sarajevo. The films will be screened in the same basement where everything started thrity years ago to offer a unique glimpse into the past. This year’s opening film also relates to Sarajevo’s past but, as its name suggests, with a focus on the future. The festival kicks off with KISS THE FUTURE, a documentary about a man in war-time Sarajevo who, with the help of a few friends, managed to get the attention of one of the world’s biggest rock ‘n’ roll bands, U2, who included the people of the besieged city in its Zoo TV tour. The festival closes with CLUB ZERO, a new film by Jessica Hausner, whose body of work is presented in this year’s Tribute To programme. Mark Cousins, Lynne Ramsay, Charlie Kaufman, and Jessica Hausner will give public talks as part of our Masterclass programme. CineLink Industry Days, Talents Sarajevo, our TV Drama Series Awards, conference programmepre-premieres and premieres of new national, regional, and international films in cinemas around Sarajevo, as well as in Mostar and Tuzla, that are also accessible throughout Bosnia and Herzegovina on the festival’s VoD platform are certain to make the 2023 edition of the Sarajevo Film Festival a unique celebration of film and television art in our city, our country, and our region. Organising a festival like ours is only possible through the generous support of our sponsors, patrons, and partners, including numerous private and public companies, government institutions, and cultural bodies of Bosnia and Herzegovina, local and international foundations, the media, and international embassies in Sarajevo, who share our values and our desire for the Sarajevo Film Festival to continue its development as a prime culture event with strong economic and social impact on Sarajevo and on Bosnia and Herzegovina as a whole. We are grateful for their support. We also wish to thank all the friends of the festival and all others who help put it together, either by working on its organisation all year round or in the pre-Festival period. Their love of film and their desire to stage a great festival is the real secret of the event’s success. Once again, we wish to welcome our audiences and guests in the hope that the 29th Sarajevo Film Festival will deliver some memorable moments! FILM OTVARANJA
29. Sarajevo Film Festival otvorit će film POLJUBITE BUDUĆNOST (KISS THE FUTURE) u režiji Nenada Čičina-Šaina (THE TIME BEING), čiji scenarij potpisuju Čičin-Šain i Bill Carter (MISS SARAJEVO).
Kako blokada traje godinama, življenje postaje čin odbrane, a rock i punk muzika inspirišu i odvlače pažnju od svakodnevnog užasa granata i snajpera. U filmu se pojavljuju Bono, The Edge, Adam Clayton, Bill Clinton, Christiane Amanpour, Mirsad Purivatra, Vesna Andree Zaimović, Senad Zaimović, Enes Zlatar, Alma Catal Hurem, Boris Šiber i Srđan Gino Jevđević. Nenad Čičin-Šain debitirao je kao reditelj 2012. filmom THE TIME BEING premijerno prikazanim na Međunarodnom filmskom festivalu u Torontu. Trenutno piše i režira THE ALGORITHM, narativni dugometražni film koji govori o šestojanuarskoj pobuni u Kapitolu Sjedinjenih Američkih Država. KISS THE FUTURE to open the 29th Sarajevo Film Festival
The 29th edition of the Sarajevo Film Festival will open with the film KISS THE FUTURE directed by Nenad Čičin-Šain (THE TIME BEING) and written by Čičin-Šain and Bill Carter (MISS SARAJEVO).
KISS THE FUTURE was produced by Matt Damon and Ben Affleck for Pearl Street Films and Sarah Anthony for Good Wolves Productions. The film is executive produced by Drew Vinton, Madison Ainsley, Alan Moloney, Jennifer Pitcher, Nenad Čičin-Šain, and Bill S. Carter. FIFTH SEASON financed the film and advised the filmmaking team. North American sales were handled by FIFTH SEASON and WME, while FIFTH SEASON television distribution is handling rest of world. KISS THE FUTURE is a FIFTH SEASON, Pearl Street Films, and an In Cahoots Production. This inescapably current story of defiance amid the Siege of Sarajevo in the 1990s follows an underground community that uses music and art to effect change and garner global attention, and the tale of a post-war concert by U2 that celebrates the city’s hard-fought triumph over ethnic nationalism. KISS THE FUTURE depicts the experiences of this extraordinary community who continued to work, create, and live in the city throughout the siege. As the blockade stretches on for years, living becomes an act of defiance, and rock and punk music inspires and detracts from the daily nightmare of shells and snipers. Bill Carter was an American aid worker living in Sarajevo and, inspired by this local resistance, he reached out to one of the world's biggest bands, U2, to see if they could help raise global awareness of the devastating conflict. The band agreed and across the summer of 1993, their ZOO TV featured live satellite interviews with local Sarajevans. When these interviews came to an end, the band pledged to perform in the city once the conflict was over. KISS THE FUTURE follows the story of this promise and the post-war concert in which U2 performed in front of more than 45,000 fans in the liberated city. This concert is still a collective memory for the people of Sarajevo, as proof that they not only survived the siege, but also that in the midst of the horrors produced by the darkest impulses, music and art can be acts of rebellion and resistance. “On 23rd September 1997, U2 performed to 45,000 fans at Koševo Stadium, with the support acts including Bosnian groups Gazi Husrev-beg choir, Protest, and Sikter. Held around two years after the siege ended, it was a moment to show that this city had not been beaten. Once again, people were standing and living side by side. One people singing with one voice”, said director Nenad Čičin-Šain. “It’s about how it’s an act of protest, an act of resistance, to make art. And that’s what it is to be alive. The idea that these people were risking their lives to go play music together, and that people were risking their lives to come hear them play and maintain that sense of community. It’s really, really powerful stuff”, said actor Matt Damon, one of the film's producers. The film features Bono, The Edge, Adam Clayton, Bill Clinton, Christiane Amanpour, Mirsad Purivatra, Vesna Andree Zaimović, Senad Zaimović, Enes Zlatar, Alma Catal Hurem, Boris Šiber and Srđan Gino Jevđević. Nenad Čičin-Šain made his directorial debut in 2012 with THE TIME BEING, which had its premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival. He is currently writing and directing THE ALGORITHM, a narrative feature set during the January 6th insurrection of the US Capital. The film tackles Twitter's permanent ban of President Donlad Trump and is set up at Wayfarer Studios. He has two more films in pre-production with Wayfarer. KISS THE FUTURE will be screened as part of the Open Air programme. This documentary premiered as a Special Gala presentation at the Berlin International Film Festival in 2023. Learn more at FIFTHSEASON.com, follow us @FIFTHSEASON How difficult was it to decide to make a film about your personal family trauma? As an author, it fascinates me in some way that the horror that happened to me is even possible. Until that event, I was not aware that things could get out of control so quickly, so radically, without any announcement or explanation. That being said, it wasn’t easy to make this film. Slavoj Žižek was once asked how he publishes so much. He replied that while he is writing he tells himself that he is never going to publish it. I think I wrote this film in a similar way. Telling myself I'll never shoot it. In the end, I’m even acting in it. Are there any scenes in "Safe Place" that did not happen in real life? Of course. A metascene from hospital is something that couldn't possibly happen, that's probably why I wrote it. But the rest of the film is in a way more a distillate of trauma, a distillate of the experience I went through than a direct reconstruction. What did you want to achieve with that scene? When I knew what kind of story I wanted to tell, I began to think about a dramatic form that would suit such content. Should it be linear, fragmentary or something completely different? What kind of form is it that would mirror and upgrade the content created according to the traumatic event? It seemed to me that I should write something very solid and then break it in one place, make some kind of cut. Because trauma is a cut, a hole in life. That's why the film at one point leaves the solid fictional framework, the unity of time and action, and opens up to the metafilmic, autobiographical. Just as the protagonist's life is disrupted by a traumatic situation, the film itself is disrupted by a conflicting dramatic strategy. The spectator's illusion is undermined and at the same time a new dimension of the observed opens up. It would be pointless to do it in several places, because by repeating/varying that procedure would cease to be a wound and become part of the fabric of the film. When did you decide to play yourself? It actually came from the process. It was not an idea from the beginning. I was looking for an actor to play the older brother, but I was by no means sure that the choice was a good one. That was obviously a blind spot of mine. Probably the experience of that character is so close to me that everything but myself in that role seemed confusing to me. The casting process itself looked like this: I sent the actors (for all roles) selected scenes that we would then rehearse together. One on one, so to speak. I liked that intimate atmosphere. I soon realized that I can't just repeat the lines like a robot because I can't expect the actors to react correctly, so I started to pay more attention to my own interpretation. I recorded these rehearsals and later commented on the selected recordings with my colleagues. I wasn't in the frame, but they thought I sounded good, so they encouraged me to turn the camera towards myself. That's actually how the idea of me as an actor was born. How much insight did you give to Snježana Sinovčić Šiškov and Goran Marković, who play your mother and brother, into the family past beyond what was written in the script? The private context was not taboo and we touched on it spontaneously when we talked about the film. However, the work process was definitely not based on building characters based on my family members. I don't think we would get anything authentic by doing so. We would sit down and talk about the scenes; about how we see them, how they would react in that situation, how they would play it, so to speak, in their own name... We tried for a long time. I think we ended up becoming a new family. Which is not a reflection of them in private, or of my family members. Film editing is always difficult, full of doubts and difficult decisions. How much more difficult was it this time because of the story itself, full of personal emotions? Already during the writing I had to separate that personal part. Even more on set. You need that metaposition to be able to manage what you're doing. This is probably always the case with the performing arts. At the same time, the musician feels, is overwhelmed by emotions, but still reproduces very complicated compositions. This may just be something more extreme. But everyone actually has that experience; for example, you can sing and be deeply moved, but at the same time you will know whether you are hitting the right note or just screaming. I came to editing with experience of that process, and editor Marko Ferković was another, probably even more objective eye that I trusted. Koliko festivalska podrška znači autorima i producentima dokumentarnih filmova? Tijekom profesionalnih programa i predstavljanja naučio sam mnogo o procesu razvijanja filma i upoznao desetine uzbudljivih ljudi i projekata. I evo nas! Razgovarala Marinela Domančić
