Lynne Ramsay, škotska rediteljica, scenaristica i producentica, dobitnica Počasnog Srca Sarajeva 29. Sarajevo Film Festivala, 18. augusta, održala je masterclass u Festivalskom centru (Bosanski kulturni centar). Razgovor je moderirao pisac Ennis Ćehić.
Održan Masterclass sa Lynne Ramsay
Masterclass with Lynne Ramsay
The masterclass began with a screening of her short film SWIMMER. Although initially created for the needs of the 2012 London Olympics, this creation is much more than that. It's a film that would be more aptly described as artistic rather than narrative. SWIMMER follows a distance swimmer navigating through various British landscapes, and won the BAFTA award in 2012. Following the screening, Lynne Ramsay stated that this project provided her with an opportunity to experiment and that it was refreshing to work on something non-narrative and psychologically meaningful. While she enjoys working with narrative, she mentioned that this was a chance to be experimental, as every frame was important, and she felt like she was assembling a puzzle. She revealed that her transition to filmmaking happened accidentally, as she initially studied photography. The beginning of her film education was challenging since she wasn't well-versed in the language of cinema and struggled with equipment. Her experience from photography studies turned out to be valuable, helping her develop an eye for details in frames. As photography holds a significant place in her films, collaboration with the cinematographer is always crucial for Ramsay. Music and sound design are important components in her works, signalling what the film will be about and setting the atmosphere. When asked about her decision-making process in adapting literary forms into film, she said she tries to make each text her own while still respecting the author's intent. Despite having written numerous screenplays herself, the filmmaker noted that she enjoys co-authorship since the writing process can sometimes lead to loneliness. Ramsay prefers old-fashioned work models for projects. "My characters are never black and white, good or bad; I want to make them more complex. It's fascinating that filmmakers must also be psychologists in a way. That's why I'm a big fan of Bergman's work, as it feels like life is real. I also love Lynch's work, but that functions on a completely subconscious level," Ramsay said. The conclusion of the masterclass was reserved for audience questions. When asked about classic literature whose work she finds inspirational for her screenplays, she singled out Dostoevsky and Tolstoy. The audience was interested in hearing more about the themes of violence and childhood that run through her works. Ramsay mentioned that she strives to present these themes in a new light, as she dislikes repetition. She prefers to depict the consequences of violence rather than mere aggression on the big screen. She considers childhood an intriguing theme because it harbours the traumas that later define us.
Lynne Ramsay, Scottish director, screenwriter, producer, and recipient of the Honorary Heart of Sarajevo at the 29th Sarajevo Film Festival conducted a masterclass on August 18th at the Festival Center (Bosnian Cultural Center). The conversation was moderated by Ennis Ćehić.

REKVIJEM ZA VRELE DANE LJETA Cineplexx Sarajevo, 15:30 Gruzija, Grčka, 2023, 77 min. REQUIEM TO THE HOT DAYS OF SUMMER Cineplexx Sarajevo, 15:30 Georgia, Greece, 2023, 77 min. Director: Giorgi Parkosadze Guri and his mother, Sanata, have spent all of their lives in a remote mountainous valley in Georgia, distant from nearly any signs of urban civilisation. Farming, beekeeping, and cheese-making have been their routine for decades. While witnessing the daily life of mother and son, the audience is immersed in the non-verbal, contemplative relationship between the two, and through the gentle gaze of the camera, enters effortlessly into rural reality as an inseparable element of their being. Through a touching motherhood story, REQUIEM TO THE HOT DAYS OF SUMMER embraces the sadness, silence, and solitude that follow every human being as the primordial seal of their fate and inspires the reminiscence of a blissful way of life, which is still present in the unconscious memory of humanity. SILENCE OF REASON Cineplexx Sarajevo, 15:00 North Macedonia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, 2023, 63 min. Director: Kumjana Novakova Built solely from forensic visual archive and testimonies, Silence of Reason acts as a memory itself: elusive, fluid, rejecting framing, moving in all directions, spatial and temporal. He is here for the funeral of a little girl called Mirna, the daughter of his friend, Globus. As it happens, weird stuff happens on this island during the off-season: apparently, there’s a huge lizard running about; Ranko, the village idiot, is accusing the monks of sawing little Mirna in half; and, to top it all off, there’s the murder of Marillena a.k.a. “the matchstick girl” – a Romanian trans woman, and a prostitute known as the culprit for gonorrhoea cases all around the island. In charge of the investigation is Fero's friend Mungos, the island's chief of police, who draws Fero more and more into the investigation. TIME TO GET AWAY! Youth Theatre, 15:00 France, 2022, 96 min.
