Kiwanis Club of Arlington
September 22, 2022
The Kiwanis Club of Arlington began its journey on September 4th, 1952. This year it celebrates its 70th anniversary. Throughout its many years, the club has been a proud supporter of the Arlington community. Many KCA members work tirelessly to create a positive impact. From their Teacher of the Year event and Bringing Up Grades program to partnering up with the School Supply Squad and the Arlington Public Library KCA members have been actively changing the lives of many. KCA also does its best to invest in the community through donations to other nonprofits such as Mission Arlington, Safe Haven of Tarrant County, and more!

At the beginning of the 2021-2022 school year, KCA joined with School Supply Squad in an attempt to augment their capability and set a goal of reaching all “at risk” students in Arlington, TX elementary and Jr. High schools. School Supply Squad (SSS) was formed by Trinity United Methodist Church, and was supported by individual donations by the congregants. SSS stocked 30 standard elementary school items, and each month relied on school counselors to identify students who could not afford to purchase their own supplies and consolidate the school’s needs, and with 8 volunteers delivered each school’s requests. Some schools were covered by local benefactor churches, and for several years SSS was able to call on 30 elementary schools and supply the needs of around 20 schools. With the basic infrastructure in place, Kiwanis conferred with SSS to determine how the two child oriented entities could join forces to reach out to all Title 1 elementary, plus add Jr. High, schools physically located in Arlington - 66 schools in total. Training volunteers, and contacting and coordinating with schools we knew would take more than one year, so Kiwanis provided 6 volunteers and sufficient funds to reach all 66 schools before the end of the second school year, expecting a relationship and care with an estimated 50 schools. For the 2021-2022 school year we contacted 58 schools, and received requests from 38. The chart above represents what was accomplished in 2021-2022 with Kiwanis compared to previous years. Of course, 2020-21 was a terrible year of disruption for schools, however, the annual average for years to and including 2019-2020 was 7500 to 8000 items supplied. Kiwanis volunteers contacting and delivering to Arlington schools include Laura Arnhart, Larry James, Jeremy Normand, Russ Hagan, Dave Turney, Don Henderson, and Jim Burgess.

Larry James
It's official! The incoming Club President starting this October is Larry James. Larry is twice past President, therefore very experienced in this role and just the right person for the job. Aside from the Club President position, Larry has been very involved with Kiwanis. Larry was LTG of Division 39 in 2021 and 2022 and is highly active within KCA. His club involvement includes budget/finances, BUGS, sponsoring Martin High School Key Club, the Salvation Army Annual Kettle Program, and Key Club/Venture School College Scholarship Awards. Outside of Kiwanis Larry James is a TCU graduate who has worked with T&S Products for over 33 years and has been happily married to his wife Gwen since 1997. When not dedicating his time to bettering our community you may catch him practicing his "A" Game out on the golf course.

2019-2020
The Kiwanis Club of Arlington and the Arlington Public Library kicked off August by reaching out to the Arlington community with our Summer Educational Relief packs. The packs were composed of a reusable drawstring bag, school supplies, educational activities, and books to kick off the school year. Distribution was prioritized at over 7 low-income complexes and also reached children through Safe Haven of Tarrant County and Mission Arlington. Volunteers ensured that the children most in need received the items necessary to start the new school year off to a great start. We are grateful to the Arlington Public Library for joining forces with us once again and hope to continue this partnership in the future. We are also very appreciative of all of the donations we received, every donation made a difference.
